The focus of this major is to master French and learn to apply it to an occupation, a field of study, or other life interests. Students will develop an understanding of the grammar and literature of the French language and the cultures of the people who speak French. The Senior Research Project will combine French with background knowledge from courses in a Major Related Sequence (such as Education, Sociology or Human Rights Advocacy). This major is designed to meet the needs of those students intending to interact with a French-speaking population, be it in business and management, education, social services, journalism, law, travel and tourism, or other fields that require French.

Total credit hours required for degree: 120 credit hours

Program Learning Goals

Students who complete the BA in French will:

  • Demonstrate linguistic abilities in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in French.
  • Recognize and explain different cultural beliefs and practices of the people who speak French

Academic Requirements

See Core section of this catalog.

Core: 34-55 Credit Hours

Major Course Requirements

At least 30 credits beyond the 202-level must be taken in French. Prior competency in French must be demonstrated before students are enrolled in courses beyond French 202. It is strongly recommended that at least 12 of the 300- and 400-level credits be taken abroad in a program approved by the language faculty in conjunction with the Director of International Programs. Students should begin working early with their advisors and with the Office of International Programs to plan for the overseas experience, including the likelihood of additional expense associated with travel.

Major Related Courses

Students must complete either Track A or Track B.

6 Credit Hours

Track B: Experiential Track

Students may fulfill the cultural sensitivity requirements by passing the 101/102 sections of a language other than French. Students must have no prior experience with this language.

  • Secondary Foreign Language 101 (3)
  • Secondary Language 102 (3)

Major Related Sequence

A sequence of courses in another field or combination of fields, as guided by the advisor, designed to complement the major courses. Content from the major related sequence will be integrated into the Senior Research Project (15-21)
