Academic Requirements

Core/General Education: 34-55 Credit Hours

Effective for the 2022-2023 academic year, Utica University has implemented a new general education program that replaces Core. Students who are admitted, or readmitted, for the 2022- 2023 academic year or later must follow the requirements of the General Education program. Students admitted prior to the 2022-2023 academic year must follow the requirements of the Core program. For full details of program requirements, see the catalog pages for the Core program and the General Education program. Students with specific questions should consult with their academic adviser or success coach.

Major Course Requirements

At least 30 credits beyond the 202-level must be taken in Spanish. Prior competency in Spanish must be demonstrated before students are enrolled in courses beyond Spanish 202. It is strongly
recommended that at least 12 of the 300- and 400-level credits be taken abroad in a program approved by the language faculty in conjunction with the Director of International Programs. Students should begin working early with their advisors and with the Office of International Programs to plan for the overseas experience, including the likelihood of additional expense associated with travel.

Major Related Courses

Students must complete either Track A or Track B.

Track B: Experiential Track

Students may fulfill the cultural sensitivity requirements by passing the 101/102 sections of a language other than Spanish. Students must have no prior experience with this language.

  • Secondary Foreign Language 101 (3)
  • Secondary Language 102 (3)

In consultation with the student’s advisor, the requirement can be satisfied with:

Major Related Sequence

A sequence of courses in another field or combination of fields, as guided by the advisor, designed to complement the major courses. Content from the major related sequence will be integrated into the Senior Research Project (15-21)
