(Bachelor of Arts Degree English/Master of Science Degree Adolescence Education)
This is a program of study for candidates who are admitted at the undergraduate level into the 5-Year BA English-MS Adolescence Education dual-degree program. Candidates earn a bachelor’s degree in English and their Master of Science degree in education, while also becoming eligible to obtain New York State initial/professional certification in adolescence education. Candidates in this program will synthesize their experience in the dual-degree program in the Seminar in Graduate English Studies and may present on their experiences to fellow students or professionals. Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75 in their first two years and have a GPA of 3.0 at the end of their Sophomore Year; a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required in years three, four, and five.
English majors study the great heritage of the English-speaking peoples in a comprehensive and varied program that includes literature, the history and structure of the English language, and various aspects of writing. Students develop an understanding of the relationship between English and the diverse cultural traditions around the world through the study of ancient and modern foreign literature in translation. They gain cultural understanding, communication skills, and experience in scholarship.
Students planning to be certified as an English teacher of students in grades 7-12 will take pedagogical and elective courses that will strengthen their expertise in their content area of specialization. Prospective education teachers will be advised to take ENG 303 , ENG 316 , and ENG 317 when possible.
Please note, in order to transition into the masters part of this dual degree program students must: (1) meet with their education advisor, (2) apply for their bachelor’s degree by completing the necessary application , and (3) complete a 4 + 1 form for entrance into the graduate part of their program

- Present ideas about texts, in written or verbal form, appropriate to a student audience.
