What to See and Where to Stay in Central New York

Utica and the Mohawk Valley

Utica and the Mohawk Valley have a good deal to offer UC students. The area features a variety of social, cultural, historical, natural, and recreational attractions. A number of shopping centers and malls are located throughout the Utica area. Utica also has a variety of restaurants offering a wide range of ethnic foods and taste experiences well worth exploring. There are many hotels and motels in the area for the convenience of visiting family and friends, as well as bus, train, airline, and travel services to get students to and from their destinations.

The Welcome (College) Students Initiative is a campaign developed by the local Genesis Group’s College-Community Network. The initiative welcomes college students to the Mohawk Valley area by hosting an annual “Sangertown Loves College Students” event at the Sangerown Square Mall every February, encouraging mall stores to offer discounts with presentation of their college ID.  They also host other events throughout the year to help students from the eleven valley colleges to get to know the area.  The program was launched in 2009, and is still growing.  More information can be found at  www.collegewelcome.org. The Web site also has links to all of the area’s college Web sites and a college community calendar of college events open to the public is accessible from that page as well. You can stay up to date with the events of the initiative if you “Like” the Facebook page found at www.Facebook.com/CollegeWelcome or follow @CollegeWelcome on Twitter.
